‘Clean energy startups should focus on the niche markets that are underserved’ – lessons from India

The most important aspect would be to focus on the niche markets which are underserved – and there are many. For instance, household energy. Despite the availability of the grid, quality of power is relatively poor. Another one is community energy in terms of powering up schools, hospitals that struggle with stable energy supply.

Additionally, one can also look at productive energy sector especially in the rural economy and small & medium enterprises (SMEs) where there is either limited or no access to quality electricity or there is lack of sufficient capital to invest. Hence, innovating with the business models where project developers and start-ups could provide energy assets without asking consumers to purchase them are necessary to create markets that didn’t exist before. Then you can work towards next step which is to deepen markets and gain scale.
