Press release: Resham Sutra from India Named among three Grand Prize Winners in Global Competition for Social Impact Hardware

Innovations in Solar Power based Silk Reeling machines win share of $500,000 and Technical Support at ASME ISHOW

New Delhi, June 20, 2019 – Unnati machine by Resham Sutra has been named by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) among the regional grand prize winners of the prestigious 2019 ASME Innovation Showcase (ISHOW).

Unnati is the world’s first solar powered machine for reeling Tassar silk yarn, which grows in the forested areas of East India. Unnati is used to produce high quality silk yarn by rural users that can replace imported yarn in silk fabrics. It increases efficiency and improves quality of life, especially for rural women who are primarily responsible for this work. The machine has gained popularity with silk producers in some of the poorest and most remote parts of the country in Jharkhad, Odisha and Assam.

The ASME Innovation Showcase (ISHOW) is a global competition for hardware-led social innovations that helps innovators take products to market that will have a social impact. Regional competitions are held in India, Africa and the USA. Three regional winners of each receive product exposure, advice and technical insightsand a share of $500k in prizes – including an extensive design and engineering review by a panel of experts.
