AzuriTV was named a finalist for Social Impact in the 2018 Edison Awards, which is the second time Azuri has been named as a finalist. In 2017, Azuri was the gold winner for in the Energy and Sustainability/Solar Solutions category.
The Edison Awards, named after Thomas Alva Edison, recognizes and honours the world’s best innovators and innovations. The awards were established in 1987 and are often described as “the Oscars of Innovation”.
All nominations were reviewed by the Edison Awards Steering Committee and the final ballot sent to an independent judging panel. The judging panel was comprised of more than 3,000 professionals from the fields of product development, design, engineering, science, marketing and education, including professional organizations representing a wide variety of industries and disciplines.
Azuri’s impact is in rural Africa, which is an extreme example of the digital divide, as there is very little access to modern electricity or services. AzuriTV uses innovative, low powered, satellite technology to provide a solar powered 24-inch TV and 58 channels, for the first time, to thousands of rural off-grid households for less than $1 per day.
