The self-consumption energy market in France is experiencing exceptional momentum, with a 41% increase in residential solar installations in 2022. In this thriving context, Moon, a French company specializing in the design, financing, and operation of innovative solar solutions, has raised €7M in funding. The financing round includes equity, debt, and subsidies, with contributions from Kima Ventures , Raise Sherpas , Climate Club , Delmas Investments & Participations (DIP), international donors, and business angels. Subsidies from the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region further support Moon’s expansion in France while advancing its mission to bring solar energy to over 20,000 households in sub-Saharan Africa. Next steps: hire 10 new team members in Nouvelle-Aquitaine, double revenue by 2025, and reach 60,000 users across Africa.
Moon’s story: A vision of innovation and lasting impact
Founded in 2019 by Thomas Samuel , Moon was created with a clear purpose: to democratize access to solar energy and empower households to generate and manage their own power sustainably. Originally incubated within Sunna Design, a pioneer in solar street lighting, Moon quickly established itself as a key player in solar energy solutions for off-grid areas in sub-Saharan Africa. To date, the company has equipped over 20,000 households across the continent and aims to triple that figure in the coming years.
In 2024, Moon extends its activities to the French market with a comprehensive and innovative solar self-consumption solution for individuals. This offering includes an in-depth analysis of household energy consumption, detailed profitability assessments, and tailored solar system designs. Users benefit from real-time performance monitoring via a dedicated app, along with personalized advice to optimize energy use and maximize self-consumption.
A mission driven by social and environmental commitment
Moon is committed to supporting the energy transition both in Africa and France by combining sustainability with social equity. The company believes that facilitating access to clean, affordable energy is a powerful driver for reducing energy poverty and fostering economic development in underserved regions.
“ We firmly believe that solar energy should be accessible to everyone, regardless of geographic location or financial means,” says Thomas Samuel, founder of Moon. “Social and environmental impact is at the core of our approach, and every project we undertake is designed to create lasting positive change for the communities we serve.”
A funding boost to drive growth and innovation
This new funding round underscores the confidence of strategic partners in Moon’s mission and potential. Investors include notable equity firms such as Kima Ventures, Climate Club, DIP, institutional lenders, and a collective of business angels. The financing also includes a subsidy from the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region.
“These funds will enable us to scale our solar self-consumption activities in France, starting in Nouvelle-Aquitaine, where we’re recruiting for roles like commercial director, marketing director, photovoltaic installers, and solar advisors. Internationally, we aim to triple our base of users in Senegal and Togo to reach 60,000 households by 2026 and to establish permanent operations in Madagascar,” explains Thomas Samuel.
Moon is further solidifying its position in the renewable energy market by diversifying its offerings and enhancing its R&D roadmap with new product and software features. In France, the company continues to refine its services to maximize the autonomy and profitability of each installation, while addressing the pressing challenges of the energy transition. To sustain this growth trajectory, Moon is targeting an additional €3M in funding by June 2025.
