Senior Electrical Engineer

About the job

We are looking for a senior electrical engineer at NXT Grid Nigeria, a one-stop shop for solar mini-grids, that makes it simple and easy for developers to build and operate solar mini-grids. If you are self-motivated, can hold a C-level conversation and are able to assimilate/communicate electrical engineering jargon with tact then keep on reading!

In the senior electrical engineer role you are overseeing and working with other electrical engineers in developing, designing and supervising the implementation of the technical designs for mini-grids for the future sites. You will also be working with engineers in optimisation of the electrical systems and equipment to ensure maximum level of energy service to the end customer while ensuring the healthy financials of the site. This is a full-time job with flexible hours and your location will be where our customers are located – usually Lagos with trips to communities whenever required. As the title suggests, this is a position very much focussed on ensuring the good health of both existing and future mini-grids serving different communities which eventually leads to healthy financials.

Being a senior electrical engineer of NXT Grid Nigeria will require a lot of liaising between various departments, i.e. engineering/operations/finance/sales, paying attention to details, without losing sight of the overall picture. This position is challenging and at times stressful. You will be placed in uncomfortable positions where you will need to balance the interests of the company and the customers, and often be the customers’ champion within the team. Ultimately you will find smart solutions so that we under promise and over deliver, growing our happy customers base. You will be successful in this position if you are naturally both a people and a process-oriented person that is always being useful to others by preempting their needs.

We are a young company, so expect to be stretched. You will be a critical part of the team, ensuring that everyone is always able to perform at their best, thanks to the careful, constant work you put in delivering customer expectations and creating a rhythm of growth. At times you will be asked to have calls about small construction tasks such as “who is paying for that fallen pole” and at other times you may have to manage a frustrated Customer MD who misunderstood the agreement/last phone call thereby impacting the project financially. You will be the person our engineers/operations managers/bookkeepers will thank when you swoop in to resolve their concerns with customers. We are a company focused on growth, and your contribution will be key in driving this through existing and new mini-grids for our customers.

You will be responsible for:

  • Liaising with internal teams in developing project plans for the sites
  • Developing, reviewing, updating, modifying, and approving electrical design plans and work schedules
  • Liaising with customers and other engineers to ensure grid deployment projects are completed to specifications and within agreed timelines
  • Providing time to time feedback on the quality of equipment and materials used in the grid deployment based on the performance of these materials in the deployed grids
  • Maintaining and improving existing engineering processes
  • Drawing up budgets during development of project plans
  • Ensuring a safe, positive work environment at all times
  • Day-to-day monitoring of each and every grid, providing clear and concise communications to customers through engineers during troubleshoots, scheduled maintenance, grid size expansion etc. and actively support when needed
  • Providing monthly technical reports on performance of grids for each and every grid to finance lead
  • Listening to customers experiences so NXT Grid can improve its offering

Thanks to your work, NXT Grid will continue to have healthy mini-grids and deliver on its promise of reliable energy service to end-customers.

As with many young companies, a lot of the development processes are not yet in place. While this makes the challenge all the more exciting and gives a higher degree of freedom, it also means that you are expected to be independent, resourceful, and able to solve problems; if something is broken, fix it!

  • This role is open to all ages, genders, and backgrounds
  • Full time position, though you are free to schedule your work in a convenient way
  • You will be required to be exclusively working for NXT Grid, and stop any other consulting/side jobs
