Overview
An established international renewable energy manufacturer with a strong footprint across Asia is expanding into selected African markets. The business designs and supplies medium scale wind turbines, including 750 kW platforms, as well as integrated wind and solar hybrid systems for industrial and commercial clients.
They are now looking to appoint a Business Development Head to drive growth across targeted African countries, with a strong focus on Tanzania and neighbouring markets.
This is a strategic but hands on role suited to someone who understands how to open markets, build a pipeline from the ground up, and convert opportunities into secured projects within the power and renewable energy sector.
Role focus
You will be responsible for establishing the company as a credible wind and hybrid renewable energy solution provider in assigned African markets. The role covers full market development, from early stage opportunity identification through to contract closure.
Key responsibilities
- Identify and prioritise high potential markets based on policy environment, energy demand, industrial activity and investment climate
- Develop country specific market entry strategies including competitor mapping and customer segmentation
- Drive the full lead to order cycle from prospecting and qualification through to proposal, negotiation and contract award
- Build a strong pipeline of wind turbine and hybrid system projects, particularly within industrial and commercial segments
- Develop relationships with IPPs, EPC contractors, developers, utilities and large energy users
- Engage with Ministries of Energy, regulators and renewable energy agencies to understand and influence policy developments
- Monitor tender activity, local content requirements, grid access regulations, import duties and tax structures
- Represent the business at industry forums and relevant government engagements
- Identify and formalise partnerships with local developers, consultants, engineering firms and investors
- Support documentation, approvals and processes linked to project execution and equipment importation
- Provide structured weekly and monthly reporting aligned to international headquarters
Profile required
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or a related technical discipline
- MBA or postgraduate qualification is advantageous
- Strong working knowledge of the power and electricity sector
- Exposure to wind, solar or hybrid renewable energy systems
- Experience engaging with government stakeholders and utilities in African markets
- Demonstrated ability to originate and close renewable energy projects
This role requires someone commercially driven, politically aware and comfortable operating across multiple stakeholders. You should be able to work independently in market, while maintaining structured reporting and alignment with an international head office.
The position is ideally suited to candidates based in Tanzania or with strong experience operating in East Africa.
If you are looking to take ownership of market development for a technically strong renewable energy manufacturer entering Africa, this role offers significant scope and long term growth potential.
